Join hands to raise dragon fruit's value

Dragon fruit is rich in nutritional value, used to bring high economic efficiency, but recently, the consumption has faced many difficulties. Facing this situation, businesses, government and farmers are joining hands to improve the value of dragon fruit.

Enthusiasm with dragon fruit

Mr. Tran Quoc Trong has more than 10 years of experience in processing dragon fruit products. His dragon fruit wine company in Long Tri commune, Chau Thanh district, Long An province currently offers 6 types of wine and dragon fruit seed oil to the market. All products of the company are favored by domestic and foreign customers.

Mr. Trong is very enthusiastic about processing products from dragon fruit, contributing to diversifying output and improving the value of dragon fruit in his hometown. He said: "Living in the "capital" of dragon fruit, I always want to maximize the value and create many products under the Chau Thanh dragon fruit brand name to introduce to domestic and international friends.”

One of Trong's favorite projects is dragon fruit seed oil. The seeds were originally a waste in the process of making dragon fruit wine, but thanks to investment in research, he extracted oil from dragon fruit seeds, a high-value product in the fields of pharmaceuticals, food and cosmetics. Recently, Mr. Trong has successfully researched and produced dragon fruit lipstick and dried perfume from dragon fruit seed oil. The product received high praise from users after initial test.

The first edibles lipsticks with diverse tones and lip balms were officially born. According to Mr. Trong, in order for lipstick and dry perfume products to be perfected and launched on the market, many conditions are still needed. However, he will try to overcome difficulties, soon introduce to customers new products from dragon fruit.

Also from the idea of improving the quality of dragon fruit, Ms. Duong Thi Truc Giang (Director of HG Food Joint Stock Company) and her husband researched how to produce crispy dried dragon fruit. Before selling products, Ms. Giang discarded tons of ingredients due to errors in the processing process. Not giving up, she continued to research and overcome limitations in the production process until she got the perfect product to supply to the market.

In addition, HG crispy dried dragon fruit is also exported to the US and Europe. The company is in the process of testing pure dragon fruit powder for food and cosmetic technology.

Join hands to increase value

In order to have products from dragon fruit supplied to the market, in addition to the efforts of enterprises, there is also support from many sides. Ms. Duong Thi Truc Giang said that most of the current customers of her company are from trade fairs organized by the Department of Industry and Trade. Through participating in the fair, she can connect with potential customers. Mr. Tran Quoc Trong said that the lipstick and dry perfume products from dragon fruit seed oil are being researched as part of the company's trial production of high quality dragon fruit seed oil, approved and partly supported by the Department of Science and Technology. When the product was officially launched on the market, Mr. Trong's Dragon Fruit Wine Co., Ltd. was facilitated to participate in trade fairs, forums, meetings with foreign enterprises to find partners, output for products. In addition, the company was also supported with booth to display and work with partners in science and technology field. That is a solid foundation for Mr. Trong to find more partners, expand production and business.

Not only the efforts of the government, the farmers are also in the process of building a high-quality raw material area to supply the market. The program of agricultural development with high technology application on dragon fruit in Chau Thanh is being promoted towards the goal of having 3,000 hectares of dragon fruits meeting VietGAP standards and 300 hectares meeting GlobalGAP standard.

She is maintaining production according to VietGAP standards, providing fruits to Long Tri dragon fruit Cooperative. Ms. Huong said: “As a member of the cooperative, when receiving an order for standard dragon fruit, I will prioritize the cooperative. When the cooperative has no orders, I will sell fruits to other units who are in need for clean dragon fruit. As long as I grows clean dragon fruit, I'm not worried about the output."

According to a survey by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the majority of farmers in Chau Thanh district agree to produce dragon fruit in the direction of applying high technology, meeting VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. Chau Thanh District Party Committee and People's Committee have implemented many measures to support farmers in borrowing capital, planting techniques and registering planting area codes.

The story of value enhancement and finding output for dragon fruit is being carried out thanks to the cooperation of farmers, state and enterprises./.

The area of dragon fruit in the whole province by the end of the year is estimated at 8,330.36 hectares. In which, the harvesting area is about 8,087.42 hectares, mainly in Chau Thanh district, Tan An city, Tan Tru district, Ben Luc district. Harvest output in 2022 is estimated at 220,623.40 tons. The exporting of dragon fruit to the Chinese market is still facing many difficulties when that country continues to implement the Zero Covid policy and strictly controls import and export activities.
