The needs to orient rice production to export stably and develop sustainably

Rice exporters share about current difficulties

Up to now, the province has sown over 265,000 hectares, harvested over 77,700 hectares; The yield is estimated at 6.2 tons/hectares, while  the output is estimated to be over 488,000 tons; Rice prices range from 6,200 to 7,100 VND/kg. There are 11 enterprises participating in Large Field project with the implementation area of over 12,400 hectares. Currently, there are 25 rice exporters in the province. In 2022, traders exported over 593,300 tons, with a turnover of over 307 million USD. The main export markets are China, Hong Kong, Africa and some fastidious markets such as the EU, the US, Canada, Dubai, etc. Particularly for the Chinese market, exports reached over 215,800 tons, accounting for more than 36% of the total rice production. In the first quarter of 2023, total output is 223,984 tons, turnover is 120.01 million USD, an increase of 60.94% in output and 69.57% in turnover compared to 2022.

At the meeting, rice exporters mentioned some current difficulties such as capital sources and credit room; mechanism to manage floor prices of rice products; the domestic price of rice raw materials is much different from the signed export contract; production links between businesses and farmers are unstable, unsustainable;etc.

A number of proposals and recommendations were also made to aim at sustainable rice export: Exporting enterprises to have access to market information to have orientation in production and export; a policy to loosen credit limits for the rice industry so that businesses can purchase rice to stabilize production; enterprises to have access to capital with low interest rates; supplementing the list of aromatic rice varieties to fulfill the actual needs of the market, etc.
